A retail banking app for 1.4M customers, rebuilt from a 2016 codebase with a 3.1-star store rating.

Northwind had a mobile app nobody at the bank was proud of: a nine-year-old hybrid build with a 3.1-star average, an eleven-second cold start on mid-tier Android, and a crash rate that spiked every payday. Their retail customers were doing 68% of their banking in branch because the app could not be trusted with a transfer.
We rebuilt it natively — Swift/SwiftUI and Kotlin/Compose — around an offline-first ledger that queues transactions locally and reconciles on reconnect. Biometric auth, a redesigned transfer flow cut from nine screens to three, and a card-controls surface customers had been asking for since 2019. We ran the old and new apps in parallel for six weeks with a 5% phased rollout before switching the default.
Cold start fell from 11.2s to 1.4s on the same reference device. The store rating went from 3.1 to 4.7 across 41,000 new reviews, and in-app transaction volume tripled inside two quarters as branch traffic fell.
