A learning platform for 92,000 students, built to run on a school's worst laptop.
Meridian's existing platform assumed a modern laptop and a good connection. In practice half their students were on shared school machines from 2015 over congested Wi-Fi, and the platform was effectively unusable for exactly the students who needed it most.
A hard performance budget: 90KB of JavaScript on the critical path, server rendering for every content page, and offline caching of the current module through a service worker. We tested every release on a throttled 2015 Chromebook rather than on our own machines.
Time-to-interactive on the reference Chromebook fell from 14s to 2.1s. Lesson completion rose 44% among students on school hardware — the cohort the rebuild was for.
